I. Introduction

FreeCAD is a free, open-source parametric 3D CAD program. Parametric means your model is built from features and dimensions you can edit later. FreeCAD is organized into workbenches, which are tools used for specific jobs (part modeling, assemblies, drawings, CAM, FEM, architecture, other).

II. Outline

  • FreeCAD Terms
    • Workbenches are grouped tools for different tasks.
    • Document trees are where bodies, sketches, features, and reference geometry stay.
  • Major workbenches
    • Part: general solid operations
    • Assembly: constrain parts together
    • TechDraw: generate 2D drawings from 3D models
    • Draft: 2D/3D drafting helpers and construction geometry
    • BIM/Arch: architectural and building workflows
    • CAM / Path: generate toolpaths from your model for CNC workflows
    • FEM: The Finite Element Analysis workflow is used to virtually simulate and predict how a product or structure will react to real-world physical forces.
    • Spreadsheet: drive dimensions with a table
    • Mesh: inspect and edit mesh/STL data
    • Add-ons: extra workbenches through the Addon Manager
  • Import / Export
    • STEP, IGES, STL/OBJ (meshes), DXF/SVG (2D)
    • Use STEP when you care about solid geometry; use STL when you’re exporting for printing
